METACOGNITION

Thinking about thinking, or metacognition is also one component in self awareness. There are two types of metacognition. First the ability to self regulate during learning. This involves the active control of the various resources, students have available to them, such as their time, their study environment, and people. Also the regulation of motivation, and the control of cognative strategies such as organization, analogy, elaboration, etc. Second is the awareness of and the experimentation with one's own thoughts. As Krishnamurthi says, "True experimenting consists not in trying to discover the unknown, but rather in understanding the forces, the causes, that make thought cling to the known." This in turn leads to flexability in thinking, another Habit of Mind.
